Shaver Lake History
If you are at all familiar with the Fresno/Clovis area, you must know that one of the most popular things to do for Memorial Day is head up to Shaver Lake. Shaver Lake has a long history in the Fresno and Clovis communities. It is certainly the go to spot for people looking to do water sports and recreational activities. If you are looking for a quiet get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it’s perfect. Shaver Lake is located above the foothills to the North East of Fresno and Clovis, in the mountains. It is approximately ten miles east of Auberry, and at an elevation of 5,500 feet. The lake was formed with the construction of the Shaver Lake Dam. A town of the same name sits on the south west shore of the lake.
The town is a frequent stop for anyone going to and from the lake. There are plenty of shops and restaurants, it definitely warrants a stop. One of the most popular places to eat in the town is Shaver Lake Pizza. There is nothing quite like warm cheesy pizza to fill your belly after a long day at the lake! If you want to stay for an extended period of time, there are plenty of camp sites scattered throughout the area. One of these camp sites is Camp Edison.
Cabins and Rented Vacation Homes
If camping isn’t your style, don’t worry. There are also plenty of homes and cabins that are available to rent out for the weekend. They are cozy and a great place to clear your head and get back in touch with nature. This is a perfect place for a family vacation not far from town, or a romantic get-away. The cabins and homes are furnished and usually have a variety of board games and movies to watch. There are utensils to cook with and bedding. The only thing you typically need to bring is yourself and any food you want to eat while you’re up there. It certainly doesn’t get any better than that!
Fun on the Lake
The biggest attraction in the whole area is without a doubt, Shaver Lake itself. The lake covers over two square miles. After the dams completion in 1927, it has served for years as a way for people to enjoy the warm weather. The lake is home to a boat and jet ski rental business. There is nothing quite like speeding along a jet ski on the lake! They have a variety of boats including pontoons. Those are great for large groups wanting to relax on the water or go fishing.
There is a plethora of trout in the lake, making this a popular fishing destination. There are fishing derbys that take place throughout the year, with everyone hoping to catch prized fish. You don’t have to fish from a boat. There are plenty of shores along the lake to fish from, or just take in the sun and enjoy the day. Some of the shores include benches and a barbeque, so you don’t have to go back to town if you don’t want to. The water is cool year round and is a great way to get away from the summer heat. This would be the perfect way to spend your Memorial Day weekend with your family.
